Barbaric Works uses whole leaf hops and lets yeast naturally cloud their unfiltered beers! Their brewing philosophy of taking extra care to bring out the true flavors of their ingredients directly results in the rich aromas of their IPAs and saisons!
りほくん
I see! True to their name “Barbaric” (primitive/wild), their commitment to handcraft over efficiency becomes the personality of their beer. You can also feel their dedication in using British, German, and Canadian malts with Chigasaki water!

Being able to drink freshly brewed beer while looking at the brewing tanks is the best! I’m also curious about their collaboration beers with Nara Brewing and Yorocco!
I visited GOLD’N BUB, a brewpub in Chigasaki (Kanagawa) with the microbrewery Barbaric Works on-site. Both the IPA and saison were incredibly delicious!

I’ve never been to a brewpub before – I’m worried I won’t be able to keep up with the technical talk…
りほくん
Don’t worry! GOLD’N BUB has a casual atmosphere and the staff are friendly. Even as a first-timer, just say “What do you recommend?” and they’ll guide you. They also offer half-size pours, so you can try different beers little by little.
The food at this pub was absolutely incredible! This article ended up being quite food-focused.
Barbaric Works makes many collaboration beers. Their collab with Nara Brewing had an excellent reputation, and I wanted to try it but couldn’t get my hands on it.
What exactly is a brewpub? How is it different from a regular bar?
りほくん
A brewpub is a beer bar with an attached brewery. The beers they serve are brewed right there on the premises! The biggest appeal is enjoying fresh beer while looking at the actual brewing tanks. It’s a place where you can really feel the brewer’s presence, much more than a regular bar.
Brewpubs are beer bars, pubs, or taprooms with attached craft beer breweries. I love these places, so I’ve been visiting brewpubs and breweries all across Japan. Some beer bars I feature on this blog are technically “company-owned taprooms” rather than brewpubs, as the brewing facility is located elsewhere, but I include them under the brewpub umbrella.
Please check out my other brewpub visit reports too!
What kind of brewery is Barbaric Works? What beers are they known for?
りほくん
It’s a microbrewery based in Chigasaki that collaborates frequently with other skilled breweries like Nara Brewing and Yorocco. They’re especially well-regarded for their IPAs and saisons – despite small-batch production, they’ve built a reputation for quality. Their collaboration beers often generate buzz on social media too.
This is a microbrewery located in Chigasaki (Kanagawa). The brewery is attached to the pub. They’re a skilled brewery that has collaborated with Nara Brewing and Yorocco, among others. Their Nara collaboration beer creating buzz on Twitter is still fresh in my memory.
Beginner’s Guide: What is a Microbrewery?
A microbrewery is a small-scale brewing operation (generally producing less than 1,000 kiloliters annually). Rather than mass production, they’re characterized by crafting unique beers in small batches across many varieties. Many start with equipment as small as a home refrigerator, pursuing distinctive flavors rooted in their local community. Barbaric Works is a prime example, producing unique beers that reflect the terroir of Chigasaki.
You visit multiple brewpubs in one day? Don’t you drink too much?
りほくん
The trick is to enjoy half-size pours. It’s also important to plan a reasonable route, staying hydrated and eating at each stop. The Chigasaki area has HOPMAN within walking distance too, making it a great area for brewery hopping.
If it’s your first time, you’d want to try a variety. Just tell the staff “I’d like to try about 3 different beers – what do you recommend?” and they may suggest a flight set tailored to your preferences. If you’re not into IPAs, let them know and they’ll kindly guide you.
A traditional Belgian beer style originally homebrewed by farmers to drink during the working season (“saison” in French). Characterized by distinctive yeast-driven flavors – fruity, spicy, and light on the palate. Despite its complexity, it’s refreshing and easy to drink, making it an enjoyable style even for beginners.

Aren’t IPAs really bitter? I’m a little scared…
りほくん
Traditional IPAs are indeed quite bitter, but modern IPAs come in a wide variety. Barbaric Works’ IPAs especially tend to be more about citrus and tropical fruit aromas than sheer bitterness. Try a half-size first and you might discover a whole new appreciation for IPAs.
I don’t know how to choose food that goes with beer…
りほくん
There are basically two approaches: choose food with “similar flavors” or “contrasting flavors.” For example, with a hop-heavy IPA, you can either echo the bitterness with spicy food, or balance it with something sweet. The ethnic-spiced edamame here is a perfect example – the spice notes resonate beautifully with the IPA’s hop aromas.

What’s the atmosphere like at this place? Is it quiet and relaxed?
りほくん
It has a lively, casual atmosphere. It’s an open space where you can see the brewing tanks, with pleasant music playing. You can easily come alone, but it’s also great for groups. The food is genuinely excellent, so even if you come primarily for the meal, you’ll have a great time.
The beer was great of course, but the food was also absolutely fantastic. The two of us drank a lot and ate a lot. The ethnic-inspired interior atmosphere was also excellent. You can drink while watching the tanks. They’re open from the afternoon, making it perfect for daytime drinking. Highly recommended!
