Noroshi Brewing Nagareyama: Kominka Smoked Beer

Back in Japan from Seattle, the first place I headed was Noroshi Brewing (NOROSHI BREWING)! A historic kominka (traditional Japanese house) brewery in Nagareyama (Nagareyama, Chiba) strongly recommended by my brewer friend Shuto and others.

✨ Venue & Atmosphere

A charming taproom renovated from a tiled-roof kominka (traditional house). Nostalgic Japanese atmosphere meets modern brewery functionality. The name ‘Noroshi’ (beacon fire) embodies the mission of raising a signal for new culture and action, while the Japanese wolf logo raises questions about ecosystems by depicting an extinct species. Lively conversations with staff and regulars make this a community-beloved brewery.

🔥 Noroshi Brewing’s Beer Philosophy & Lineup

As the name “Noroshi” (beacon fire) suggests, this brewery’s concept is to raise a new signal in Japan’s craft beer culture. Founder Takumi Irie went independent after careers at Baird Brewing (Shizuoka) and Ushitora Brewing (Ibaraki). He obtained his brewing license in February 2025 and released his first beer in April of the same year.

The lineup includes Rauchbier Marzen (smoked beer) as well as diverse styles like IPA, Saison, and Yuzu Pale Ale. Their Rauchbier Marzen is particularly notable for its faithful adherence to the traditional methods of Germany’s Bamberg region, making them one of Japan’s go-to breweries for authentic Rauchbier.

Particularly noteworthy is their operation as a farm brewery directly managed by “Irie Farm.” By situating the brewery within a farm, they achieve integration with regional agriculture and sustainable brewing. Expansion into beers using local Nagareyama ingredients is also anticipated.

🍺 Beer Experience: Smoked Beer (Rauchbier Marzen)

A Rauchbier Marzen originating from Bamberg, Germany. The smoky toastiness from smoked malt (Rauchmalz) blends exquisitely with the rich malt sweetness of the Marzen style. An atmospheric beer you’d want to savor slowly by a campfire. This quality level is rare among Japanese breweries.
