Hi there! I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. The second destination on my New Orleans trip was Urban South Brewery, the largest brewery in New Orleans and a renowned producer known for their distinctly Southern, sweet-finishing beers.
What is Urban South Brewery?
Urban South Brewery is New Orleans’ largest brewery and the second-highest production brewery in Louisiana. Founded in 2016, their taproom on Tchoupitoulas Street is open seven days a week, welcoming both local beer fans and tourists alike. They’re known for sweet, Southern-influenced fruit sours and approachable Hazy IPAs. I’d been keeping an eye on them as a brewery with smoothie sour-like styles.

Facilities & Brewery Tour
The brewery tour was an excellent value at $15, including a 10oz beer and souvenir glass. I wasn’t expecting to get both a tour and a gift, so it was a wonderful surprise. The taproom has a family-friendly atmosphere where you can enjoy beer alongside Urban Smash’s smash burgers.

The mango sour was particularly impressive – its thick, smoothie-like mouthfeel and slowly spreading aftertaste are truly addictive. While Seattle’s Urban Family Brewing also excels at sours with their acidity-forward approach, Urban South’s Southern style focuses on the balance between sweetness and tartness.
Fruit sours derive their tartness from lactic acid fermentation. Adding large amounts of fruit puree like mango creates that thick, smoothie-like mouthfeel. This beer style is a perfect match for Louisiana’s hot climate!
I actually tried Urban South’s beer in Okayama (Japan) before and always thought “this must be close to a smoothie sour.” Drinking it at the source confirmed exactly that! The $15 tour with a souvenir glass is an unbeatable deal too.
Mango sour – just the name sounds delicious! The idea of a thick, smoothie-like texture makes my tail wag non-stop! The sweet Southern vibe and beer seem like a perfect match!
