What Kind of Craft Beer Is This?

Beer Characteristics

In 2015, Stone brewed Stone Thunderstruck IPA for their 19th anniversary, pioneering the use of Australian hops.

The beer was enormously popular, and Stone fans eagerly awaited its return… Finally, by fan vote, it makes a powered-up limited comeback! This Downunderstruck IPA uses Australian Galaxy, Ella, and Vic Secret hops, bumping the ABV from the original 8.7% to 9.0% with increased hop usage.

Aromas of tropical fruit, peach, citrus, and pineapple plus peppery spice and dank herbs.

On the palate, juicy flavors echoing the colorful fruits from the aroma with gentle malt character.

A firm bitterness lingers in the mouth after swallowing.

Craft Beer Review

Appearance

Slightly deep gold with brownish tones. Chill haze makes it opaque when cold, but clears as temperature rises.

Aroma

Orthonasal Aroma

Strong watermelon-like sweetness. Juicy. Slight grape-like impression too. Fruity with alcohol. You can tell the hops are beautifully loaded to the maximum the alcohol can carry.

Retronasal Flavor

Classic Stone alcohol presence with clean New Zealand-style aromas. Menthol-like. Excellent balance between hop coolness and alcohol coolness. A hint of grape skin while malt protein comes through. Pear-like acidity and persimmon-like astringency, yet nothing unpleasant. The impression is of aromas loaded to maximum capacity on the alcohol, while remaining a true WCIPA, not hazy. Cool.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Body and Texture

Stoneらしいアルコール。桃のようなニュージーランド系のホップの印象。ホップの草っぽい印象。モルトの甘さ。口あたりに感じる甘さはまったりとのどにかけていく。Stoneらしい砂糖を焦がした紅飴のようなまったりとしたやや重い印象がある、

The Swallow

Luxuriously dank while cold and carbonated. Still dank even as carbonation fades, though more subdued.

Aftertaste

Tea-like grassiness. Later, hop bitterness gradually kicks in, mixing pleasantly with alcohol stimulation.

Bottom of the Glass

Strong peach and cherry-like fruity impressions. But alcohol is strong too. No dankness, drinks smoothly like water. Delicious. Smooth drinking with no harshness at the bottom.

Overall Impression

StoneらしさとNZ系のホップを利かせてくるいいビール。とてもおいしい。クラシカルなStoneらしいアルコールの味を出しながら、はやりのホップをツヵってフルーティに仕上げていた。
