I visited twice during my Kyoto trip, and then stopped by once more when passing through Kyoto during a trip home.

Having nearly 10 taps and every single one being delicious is just unfair, right? When I visited, they had a Habanero Porter. The contrast between the porter’s chocolate-like sweetness and the habanero heat that follows was incredibly interesting.

The high-ABV sour was also excellent. And their lager was so good that I drank 2.5 pints of it across my three visits.

I’ll definitely be back again this year-end!

🍺 Recommended Beers
Kyoto Beer Lab maintains about 10 taps, brewing a wide range of styles from classics to experimental. Here are the beers that stood out across my three visits.
Habanero Porter
As mentioned in the report, this is a bold offering unique to Kyoto Beer Lab. After the porter’s characteristic chocolate and coffee-like sweet roast, the habanero heat slowly creeps in. You’re surprised at first — “Wait, it’s spicy?” — but the contrast between sweet and heat becomes strangely addictive. This is especially a must-try for those who are normally skeptical about chili beers.
Lager
Craft brewery lagers can be hit-or-miss, but Kyoto Beer Lab’s lager had me hooked — I drank 2.5 pints across my three visits. Clean flavors with a subtle malt sweetness pair beautifully with Kyoto’s Japanese cuisine. Perfect as a first pour on hot days.
High-ABV Sour
The higher-ABV sour ale was also memorable. The beautiful balance between fruity acidity and solid body makes it enjoyable as a dessert beer. Seasonal fruit sours are released regularly, so always check the tap list when visiting.
