Organizer

This was a joint event between MBCT (Mikkeller Beer Celebration Tokyo) hosted by Mikkeller, and the Japanese beer festival KPN.

Venue & Atmosphere

It was held at the Royal Danish Embassy in Tokyo (Nakameguro, Tokyo). About a 10-minute walk from Nakameguro Station. The venue was outdoors. It never got so crowded that you couldn’t move, and the attendance felt just right.

Portable restrooms were provided, so there were no issues with bathroom access.

For lunch, I had ramen at a shop in Nakameguro and killed time at Tsutaya Books.

1位 AJB / Foeder Sour w/ Cassis Nebbiolo Wine Barrel (Barrel aged sour 7%)

It was so good I wondered why they don’t launch a separate lambic brand. Despite strong acidity, it didn’t feel overpowering – it was drinkable with complex fermentation-derived flavors. Undoubtedly my best of the day. I’d love to savor it again. Their Bashamichi (Yokohama) brewing facility has also started operations.

2位 3Sons / BIG SXXXY AMERICAN PIE (imperial stout14.6%)

I had at least 5 pours of this. Beyond just sweetness, there was an apple pie crust-like nuance that maintained cookie and grain characteristics. It’s the type that could give you palate fatigue from all the sweetness, but it was so incredibly delicious that I kept going back for more.

3位 麦雑穀工房 / Nara Harvested Saison (Foeder Saison w/ Sansyo 6%)

This was an amazing beer where Japanese sansho pepper fruitiness intertwined with foeder complexity. I thought it was quite similar to 2ndSAN’s Japonica. Another unforgettable beer. It reminded me again how Japanese sansho pepper completely transforms when used in beer.

4位 箕面ビール×Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast Coffee Stout with Anko (imperial stout9%)

This was a beer with absolutely no sweetness – full-on tobacco character. Yes! This is exactly what I’ve been wanting!

５位 FRIENDS / Dream Smoojee Nordic Berry (smoothy sour 4.7)

I don’t usually drink smoothie sours, but this one was refreshing and easy to drink. The smooth mouthfeel blending with refreshing acidity was really appealing.

番外編 Omnipollo Dyplomata (フロート乗せあまあまサワー)

A sour with ice cream float! Delicious! They poured the float after the beer. One word of caution: even after rinsing the glass, the sweetness completely dominates the glass’s aroma. Something to keep in mind if your next pour is a lighter style. (I ended up having two.)

Food

Everything was 500 yen each! So affordable! The hot dogs were elaborate and loaded with fried onions. Really appreciated that. There were many ice cream flavors too – I chose salted caramel. Unfortunately, the burgers sold out around 6:30 PM…

Beers Consumed: How Many Did I Drink?

I drank 32 pours! Each one was about 50ml, so I was able to try a lot. (After the event, I went to Two Fingers and had two half-pints – a Simtra and a Knee Deep x WCB Hazy.)

Summary

There were many imperial stouts. By comparing them side by side, I really understood that there’s such a wide variety within the imperial stout category. I also learned that different stouts pair with different ice cream flavors, which was exciting. I really wanted to organize a tasting share event. If you’re interested, please reach out!
