Slightly toasty malt sweetness takes the lead? Forms the base. Supported by slightly grassy hops. The dry hopping seems moderate, with good balance that lets the malt stay in the spotlight. Berry, chicle-gum tropical notes reminiscent of Mosaic and Simcoe.
Retronasal Flavor
Intense licorice. Columbus. Plus malt. You could even call it herbal/medicinal. Slightly minty. A mandarin orange-like sweetness too. No astringency at all.
Taste
Mouthfeel
Natural beer-like quality. Slides in smoothly, then beer-like bitterness arrives.
Body and Texture
On the tongue, a gradual licorice-like herbal quality (Columbus-derived) builds alongside growing bitterness. Malt sweetness. Clean, metallic acidity. There’s a mellow atmosphere but it never becomes cloying.
The Swallow
Columbus licorice comes through strongly. Combined with the alcohol, you might call it dank, though it might be slightly too subtle for that label. The licorice plus malt sweetness creates a black tea-like quality.
Aftertaste
A long black tea character joined by grassy hops and orange. Orange sweetness is pronounced. A marmalade-like sweetness with slight acidity. Not unpleasant at all. Delicious.
Overall Impression
Columbus takes the lead? The licorice quality during the swallow is beautifully clean, and the malt is equally refined. A quintessential REVISION WCIPA. Less of the resinous quality found in Knee Deep (barely noticeable unless you look for it). Clean licorice plus malt — that was my Revision / Leafy Greens (WCIPA 7.5%) review!
Dregs
Strong peel notes. Drinking the dregs reveals the substantial dry hopping. Mouthfeel is watery and not clingy. Surprisingly gentle. Water chemistry at work? Not harsh at all — drinkable even mixed in. You might not even need to separate. Still, it tastes different from the body, so separating has its charms.
