About This Beer

Characteristics

This is a Marzen beer. Back when brewing facilities were limited, it was reportedly illegal to brew beer during the warmer months. So brewers would make higher-alcohol beers that could last until around October. What a great concept! I had only read about this style in a beer encyclopedia. It’s a style I’ve rarely tried, and this was the first time I’d even seen one for sale.

Appearance

Clear

Aroma

Orthonasal Aroma

Citrus notes reminiscent of orange, followed by gentle noble hops.

Retronasal Flavor

Minty notes like toothpaste, ester character, and that signature Yebisu flavor.

Taste

Mouthfeel

A natural, beer-like quality. Roasty malt character? It evokes autumn.

Body and Texture

Flavors reminiscent of marmalade chocolate. The bitterness spreads slowly and gently. Swirling the liquid in your mouth reveals a solid hop bitterness. It’s like cookies at first, with impressions of lemon and citrus peel. The malt layering is beautifully done. As it warms, there’s enough malt presence to feel almost sticky.

The Swallow

You can clearly sense the raw, earthy character of noble hops.

Aftertaste

A lingering marmalade-like impression.

Overall Impression

As it warms slightly, you can really taste the characteristic Marzen sweetness. Well-balanced. The alcohol is less noticeable than this year’s Amber Yebisu. I’d love to do a side-by-side comparison.
