Stone’s anniversary. Stone and I are the same age, so I feel a special connection. An anniversary release from a brewery known for their tobacco-like beers! I had to buy it.

A limited release celebrating Stone’s 27th anniversary. Generously brewed with Southern Hemisphere Peacharine and Riwaka hops, Phantasm, and American Mosaic hops. A unique experience bursting with dank character, tropical fruit, and citrus flavors

For this year’s anniversary beer, we found inspiration in the Southern Hemisphere.

This Double IPA is brewed with Peacharine and Riwaka hops, plus Phantasm from New Zealand.

Combined with American Mosaic hops and a carefully crafted malt bill, it creates a unique experience filled with dank character, tropical fruit, and citrus flavors.

For this year’s anniversary beer, we found inspiration in the southern hemisphere. This double IPA is brewed with Peacharine and Riwaka hops, along with a special ingredient called Phantasm – an extract from sauvignon blanc grape skins – all sourced from New Zealand. Combined with some good old fashioned Mosaic hops from the US and an amped up grain bill and we’ve got ourselves a unique sensory experience full of dankness and tropical citrusy notes. Coming in at a smooth 9.6% in honor of the year we started: 1996.

For this year’s anniversary beer, inspiration came from the Southern Hemisphere. This Double IPA is brewed with Peacharine and Riwaka hops, plus Phantasm, a special ingredient extracted from Sauvignon Blanc grape skins. Allfrom New Zealand. Combined with classic American Mosaic hops and stimulating grain aromatics, it creates a unique sensory experience full of dank and tropical citrus aromas. In a nod to the 1996 founding year, it clocks in at 9.6%.

99. American-Style India Pale Ale

American IPA ranges in color from pale to copper. Chill haze is acceptable. Hop haze may also be present regardless of temperature. Fruity esters range widely from low to high. Hop aroma and flavor are high to very high, with floral, fruity (berry, tropical fruit, stone fruit like plum and apricot, blackcurrant、etc.), sulfur or diesel-oil-like aroma, onion/garlic aroma, citrus aroma, or pine resin aroma. Hop bitterness is medium-high to very high. Malt aroma and flavor are medium-low to medium. Diacetyl, if perceived, is acceptable at very low levels. Body is medium-light to medium. 100. Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale

Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale ranges in color from straw to dark light amber. Haziness is characteristic of this style, with turbidity levels ranging from light to significantly cloudy. Starch, yeast, hops, protein, and other factors contribute to the varied haze. Fruity esters are medium-low to medium-high, refreshing the malt sweetness and accentuating the hop aromaand accentuating hop aroma. Hop aroma and flavor are medium-high to very high, particularly exhibiting fruity, tropical, and juicy character. Hop bitterness is low to medium. Perceived bitterness is soft and harmonizes cleanly with overall balance. Actual perceived bitterness is considerably lower than IBU values. Malt aroma and flavor are low to medium-low. Appearance (SRM)

5-7. Some haze.

Aroma

Aroma (Orthonasal)

Malt and white grape. Skin-like impression. White grape dominates. A clean character dissolved in alcohol. A hint of plum-like acidity in the background.

Flavor (Retronasal)

Grape skin-like acidity. Woody impression. Slight honey-like quality. A beautiful blend of grape, kiwi, and tobacco. Woody but with minimal resinous character — only on the surface. Clean beer alcohol.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Slippery alcohol-driven mouthfeel. Not wheat or oat-based — strong alcohol presence with a touch of spice. Very Stone. This is what I love. Slight ginger-like heat, but only on initial contact andしつこくなくドライ。

Body and Texture

Starts with a cool alcohol sensation, then constantly wine-like on the tongue. A fizzy sensation builds with sweetness like burnt cookies minus the bitterness. Rich grape layered on top is beautiful. While the Stone-ness fades, you can strongly sense their approach of pairing fruit skin character with alcohol.

The Swallow

Might be close to 2nd SAW. Pushes with grapefruit peel. Sudachi defines 2nd SAW, but this is completely different in that you can session it. Dry but leaves just a touch of flavor. Subtle dank character. Like swallowing grape skin whole.

Aftertaste

Dry with a hint of lingering grape skin.

Dregs

Citrus-forward confection. No concern about spice or astringency at all. Delicious.

Tasting Notes

Maybe because I’ve learned so much about Hazies, the style has become too diverse to adequately score numerically.

Adjuncts slightly dominating over hop flavor. Fine if balanced, but concerning that hops are being overshadowed.

The adjuncts seem to be used to the point of drowning out the hops, which takes it further from the Stone identity.
