Beer Style Guidelines

99. American-Style India Pale Ale

American IPA ranges in color from pale to copper. Chill haze is acceptable. Hop haze may also be present regardless of temperature. Fruity esters range widely from low to high. Hop aroma and flavor are high to very high, with floral, fruity (berry, tropical fruit, stone fruit like plum and apricot, blackcurrant、etc.), sulfur or diesel-oil-like aroma, onion/garlic aroma, citrus aroma, or pine resin aroma. Hop bitterness is medium-high to very high. Malt aroma and flavor are medium-low to medium. Diacetyl, if perceived, is acceptable at very low levels. Body is medium-light to medium. 100. Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale

Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale ranges in color from straw to dark light amber. Haziness is characteristic of this style, with turbidity levels ranging from light to significantly cloudy. Starch, yeast, hops, protein, and other factors contribute to the varied haze. Fruity esters are medium-low to medium-high, refreshing the malt sweetness and accentuating the hop aromaand accentuating hop aroma. Hop aroma and flavor are medium-high to very high, particularly exhibiting fruity, tropical, and juicy character. Hop bitterness is low to medium. Perceived bitterness is soft and harmonizes cleanly with overall balance. Actual perceived bitterness is considerably lower than IBU values. Malt aroma and flavor are low to medium-low. Appearance (SRM)

4-6. Slightly hazy.

Aroma

Aroma (Orthonasal)

Strong NZ character. Grape skin. Menthol. Behind it, a substantial malt sweetness. Menthol. Watermelon-like gourd impression. Salt on watermelon.

Flavor (Retronasal)

Grape skin. Chili pepper without the heat. Roasted peanuts minus the burnt smell. White grape. A hint of persimmon.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Beer-like. No pretentiousness.

Body and Texture

Feels light on initial mouthfeel but is actually quite dense. Heavy malt presence. When swirling in the mouth, there’s a strong Hazy-like sweetness reminiscent of Fanta or Hi-Chew candy.

The Swallow

Dank. Satisfying to drink. Goes down in big gulps.

Aftertaste

Not dry, but clean. Like a 2nd SAW without the fruit. If there were a unifying element, it would be great, but it feels somewhat half-baked. There’s this puzzling impression of being simultaneously heavy and fleeting.

Dregs

Strong menthol-like aroma.

Overall very delicious, but as a WCIPA I’d want more bitterness, and as a Hazy I’d want more tropical character. It leaves a somewhat indecisive impression.

Overall Impression

Strong tropical character, almost Hazy-like, but the mouthfeel and flavor are WCIPA. Tasty but feels caught between two styles.
