Beer Review

Appearance

Black. Deep black even when held up to light. Maruefu shows some transparency when backlit, but this one shows absolutely none.

Aroma

Aroma (Orthonasal)

Burnt notes, tobacco, slightly oily. Dark chocolate. A touch of malt flavor like a chocolate-covered cookie.

Flavor (Retronasal)

A touch of mint, a touch of grain, a touch of ester — *all existing in beautiful balance*.
There’s also the Belgian beer-like ester that’s typical of Premium Malt’s. I tend to avoid Premium Malt’s because of this, but it’s only slight here so it’s fine.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Beer-like, but with a slightly heavy feel.

Body and Texture

Chocolate flavor. Barely any biscuit quality — it glides down smoothly like a beautiful Schwarzbier. (Though the esters seem a bit strong to truly call it a Schwarzbier.) As it warms in the mouth, hop-derived acidity becomes prominent. More acidic than last year? After the acidity, an intense bitterness follows. Beautiful bitterness with a minty quality. Delicious.

The Swallow

Barely any dank quality. Maybe a hint of dankness in the carbonation’s bite? That’s about it. Goes down incredibly smoothly.

Aftertaste

Dry, but the lingering beer aroma in the mouth gives a marmalade-like impression. Delicious.

Overall Impression

An exquisitely delicious dark beer. I’d love to compare it side by side with Maruefu.
