About This Beer

Characteristics

With a higher malt content than regular Black Label, this beer highlights the richness of grain while suppressing off-flavors through extended sub-zero aging (*).

Please enjoy this special Black Label that pursues even deeper malt richness while retaining the crisp aftertaste and endlessly drinkable character — the hallmark “nama” (draft) taste of Black Label.

* Aged 1.5 times longer than regular Black Label at sub-zero temperatures

Availability

Last year it was available from mid-November through winter. This year it seems to have been timed to align with other breweries’ autumn releases. I couldn’t find clear information on when sales end, but if it follows last year’s pattern, it should be available through winter. *Note: Until last year, it was called “Extra Malt.”

Beer Review

Aroma

Aroma (Orthonasal)

Sweet, honey-like sweetness. A slightly cookie-like grain impression.

Flavor (Retronasal)

Refreshing notes of lemongrass and mint. Saaz hops, perhaps?

When you drink it quickly, you can feel lager esters at the back of the nose.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Natural beer-like character with lively carbonation.

Body & Texture

You feel a strong malt hit for an instant before it lightens up. Easy to gulp down.
As the temperature rises on the tongue, the malt flavor suddenly softens and the hop bitterness becomes more prominent in the mouth.

The Swallow

Saaz hops with a strong chicle sensation (like flavorless gum) gently flow through the nose.

Aftertaste

A refreshing marmalade and mint-like sensation lingers long. A clean, bitter finish.

Overall Impression

A Black Label with enhanced grain character from the malt. Incredibly, incredibly delicious. I look forward to it every year. Writing tasting notes for major brewery beers is surprisingly difficult, isn’t it? I’m sure I’ve written some off-the-mark observations here. Please be generous with your judgment. Also, it’s so good thatI end up finishing it before I can take proper notes. But at least I’m drinking it at its best — before the carbonation fades. That wraps up my review of Sapporo Black Label Extra Draft.
