This is Wayfinder’s Italian Pilsner! An Italian Pilsner is a pilsner that uses European hops for dry hopping.

Availability

It was imported around June. The importer is HATOSBAR.

Beer Review

Appearance

Crystal clear — not even a trace of chill haze.

Aroma

Orthonasal Aroma

Orange, floral, lemongrass, ester-derived pineapple (isobutyl acetate?) plus hop-derived pineapple. As it warms, a beautiful malt aroma like slightly toasty, lightly buttered bread emerges. Subtle esters follow. The esters are less noticeable at warmer temps? It becomes hard to tell whether the dry hopping is restrained — just before swallowing, there’s something like liquid approaching a flower.

Retronasal Flavor

Floral aromas spread refreshingly through the mouth. Just holding a few drops reveals an incredible expansion of aroma. Esters are relatively strong too? The refreshing comfort that passes through the nose after swallowing is wonderful. Mint-like. The power of Polaris?

Taste

Mouthfeel

Water-like beauty. Gentle but not cloying. Subtle carbonation — goes down incredibly smooth.

Body and Texture

Even on the tongue, clean as water. Slips right onto the palate. Even as it warms, the bitterness doesn’t become harsh. A beautiful, slightly metallic astringency develops as bitterness gradually intensifies. Only when held on the tongue for a long time does strong bitterness finally emerge. As it warms, a slight premium lambic-like acidity also appears.

The Swallow

Goes down so pleasantly you’d think it was water. Beautiful. Then a touch of lemon and marmalade graces the palate. More Sichuan pepper (huajiao) than coriander? A slight spice note. As it warms, slight banana notes too. Isoamyl acetate?

Aftertaste

A pleasant astringency with marmalade peel-like bitterness lingers beautifully.

Overall Impression

The comfort of the swallow is simply irresistible.

Dregs

Strong esters. Definitely better to separate the dregs. Slightly adhesive? Maybe a solvent note?
