Characteristics

Surlyの15周年を記念するこのビールは、ケンタッキー州Heaven Hill蒸留所のPaker’s Heritage Heavy Charのバーボン樽で8ヵ月間熟成させたベルジャンストロングエールと、ユタ州High West蒸留所のライウイスキー樽で寝かしたワイルドエールをブレンドしています。


ココア、ミルクチョコレート、プラムのような味わいにささやかな酸味と、樽由来のハチミツやバニラのような風味、そしてベルジャン酵母特有のスパイシーさが複雑に絡み合います。 (From Antenna America official page)

Beer Review

Appearance

Transparent! Amazing! You can see through to the other side! Slight haze.

Aroma

Aroma (Orthonasal)

Barrel-aged oakiness. Strong whiskey notes. I’ve only had White Horse whisky, but it has that kind of vibe. Plus a touch of berry. Maybe a hint of chicle? Berry-forward. Whiskey takes the lead.

Flavor (Retronasal)

Intense bitterness. Whiskey-like quality. And it reminds me of the wild plums I picked and ate as a kid! Rural, strongly tart ただ、ウイスキーのようなフレーバーが広がり、そちらが支配的なのは注目したい。スモーキーともいいがたいまさにウイスキー！なフレーバー。とすもものさわやかさ。
There’s also a slight soy sauce note in the aroma that adds complexity. Not just plain soy sauce — it’s like soy sauce drizzled on mochi and toasted in an oven. Nice.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Fruity and viscous. Ripe peach-like fruitiness chased by barrel-aged whiskey character! The beer’s carbonation creates a highball-like experience — truly enjoyable.

Body and Texture

The body is fairly substantial, but as it warms on the tongue, a plum-like quality emerges. It’s like plum after plum — really fun. Specifically, it has great longevity. The tingling sensation that develops midway is reminiscent of the wild plums I used to forage as a kid. Incredible. かなり口当たりが水っぽくてハイボール感のある飲み口。ゴクゴクも飲めそう。しかし10.5%。 チルヘイズ無くなった液体が綺麗。

The Swallow

Not flashy. Almost like drinking water. But if you gulp it, you’ll find a peppery, grassy hop quality and intense bitterness.

Aftertaste

Whiskey. Clean whiskey. Plus a slight berry-like aftertaste. Delicious. 後味に少し残るカカオっぽさ。ここがビールらしい。ウイスキー主役であることに変わりない。
余韻に少しスターチとか、味付けのないポップコーンみたいな穀物感がある。余韻を支配するのがういすきーじゃないところがとてもとてもいい。

Overall Impression

I sense a creativity here — as if beer has been elegantly brought closer to a highball. Truly cool. With whiskey-barrel beers, I think the challenge is how to dial back the chocolate and cookie flavors to let the distilled spirit character shine through. It’s amazing how cleanly they’ve restrained those elements while letting the hops and barrel aging take center stage. ゴクゴク飲めるウイスキー。

Dregs

Super whiskey aroma. Rich hop citrus. Surprisingly, there are peach, orange, ginjo-like, and tropical notes. Nice. This is a brewery that makes excellent WCIPAs.
