What Kind of Beer Is This?

Characteristics

A high-alcohol version of the dark beer style “stout.” Rich malt character from generous use of various roasted malts, with fruity aromas and a deeply satisfying flavor.

This beer is deeply meaningful to the brewery, as it inspired the creation of their signature “Stout.”

When first brewed, the intense aroma and flavor left a lasting impression.
To create an everyday version, they lowered the ABV while preserving the flavor balance, resulting in their standard Stout.

真っ黒、光に当てるとややすける

Aroma

Orthonasal Aroma

Strong hop presence blending with malt, Mosaic-like hops with passion fruit character. Deeper sniffing reveals tobacco notes. Light yet fizzy like soda. Phenolic. Beautiful. Heavy chocolate at the base. Comforting. Despite seeming heavy, the aroma is surprisingly clean.

Retronasal Flavor

Minty freshness. Lemongrass-like aroma layered with heavy chocolate malt. Strong alcohol warmth. Bread-like grain notes. Toasted bread crust.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Gentle

Body and Texture

Bread-like grain quality with bread crust character. As it rests on the tongue, hop bitterness gradually builds. Marmalade-like citrus. A puree-like quality.

The Swallow

Like pure water. Goes down beautifully while a cider-like sweetness passes through the back of the nose.

Aftertaste

Marmalade-like citrus lingers as it fades refreshingly. Bourbon-like chocolate alcohol warmth. Combined with the chocolate sweetness, it’s enchanting.

Overall Impression

The balance of alcohol warmth, bold hops, and malt is superb. Just the right refreshment. The clarity reminiscent of Daisen’s (Tottori) water is endearing. A flavor that soaks into your body. That was my review of Kumezakura Daisen Brewery Imperial Stout 2021 at 9%!

Dregs

A blend of slight hop spiciness and roasted malt. Delicious.
