Beer Characteristics

Taru San (meaning: third barrel) features a base saison aged for four years in French oak barrels before undergoing a secondary fermentation on wild honey. Lemon pith, vanilla, and oak tannins make for a refreshing and spritzy concoction. Enjoy today or cellar for tomorrow.

Appearance

Golden with a slight haze.

Aroma

Orthonasal Aroma

Whiskey-like bourbon character. Barrel-aged origin. Deep within, a honey-like cool sweetness from the alcohol emerges. There’s also a vanilla-like sweet malt impression. Light. Despite the cool alcohol presence, there’s minimal boozy harshness. The privilege of low ABV.

Retronasal Flavor

Grape and grapefruit-like impressions gently appeal to the back of the nose, transitioning into hassaku (Japanese citrus). Beautiful citrus character. Initially, a saison-like, slightly metallic, floral ester gently appeals to the nose, then softly transitions into hassaku-like citrus. Very clean.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Gently soft. Enters the mouth naturally like water.

Body and Texture

Light. Strong pineapple impression. (A pineapple that would become kiwi at higher ABV – fermentation-derived?) There’s a lingering impression somewhat close to the yogurt-like acidity found in low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beers.

The Moment of Swallowing

Crisp yet with lingering acidity. An umeshu (plum wine)-like impression remains. The low ABV makes swallowing extremely smooth with no dank impression at all. Nice.

Aftertaste

A refreshing sensation like swallowing sugar-preserved canned fruit. The fruitiness leaves zero bitterness behind, cleanly preserving only the fruity character. Beautiful.

Bottom of the Glass

Strong yeast-derived astringent bitterness. Definitely best to pour carefully. However, it drinks refreshingly for its color. Apart from the strong earthy, raw yeast impression, it goes down smoothly. Delicious. An impression of plum, flowers, earth, and hassaku all packed together.

Overall Impression of Godspeed / Taru San

A wonderful beer that packs whiskey-like complexity into a low ABV package. I was impressed by how it conveys the best qualities of whiskey without the harshness of high alcohol. The beer-like drinkability and fruitiness packed within was excellent. A blend of lager and saison – two beers fermented at different temperatures – then aged. How romantic! That was my Godspeed / Taru San 4.2% review!
