We met co-founder/head brewer Evan on this year’s hop trip to New Zealand. Codename: Peacharine is a new advanced selection from our breeding programme.

Our Peacharine has a rich peach/nectarine character with an appealing citrus backbone.  In the background are hints of sweet fruit, lime zest and indistinct floral notes.  We are still exploring the flavour/aroma spectrum of this new varietal, but our mid to late harvest lots are not likely to ever leave the lineup.  Peacharine can easily captivate in a single hop beer, but also pairs well with a wide range of both thiol and terpene heavy varietals, like later harvested NZ Cascade.

Codename: Peacharine is a newly selected advanced variety from our breeding program.
Our Peacharine has rich peach/nectarine characteristics with an attractive citrus backbone. Sweet fruit, lime peel, and subtle floral aromas are present in the background. We’re still investigating the flavor and aroma spectrum of this new variety, but mid- to late-harvest lots are unlikely to disappoint. Peacharine is not only captivating as a single-hop beer, but later-harvestedNZカスケードのような、チオールとテルペンの両方を多く含む幅広い品種ともよく合います。

The 2022 Experimental was harvested on 24/03/2023. This Mid harvested hop comes in T90 Hop Pellets from the 25 block(s) of Freestyle Hops Sunrise Valley, Upper Moutere farm. This Nectarine, Red Plum, White Grapefruit Hop has a best by date of 1/12/2024.

103. Juicy or Hazy Imperial India Pale Ale

　Juicy or Hazy Imperial IPA ranges in color from straw to light amber. Haziness is characteristic of this style, with turbidity from light to significantly cloudy levels. Starch, yeast, hops, protein, andの他が、多様な濁りの原因となっている。フルーティーなエステルはミディアム・ハイからハイ・レベルで、モルトの甘味を爽やかにし、ホップ・アロマを強調する役割を果たしている。ホップのアロマとフレーバーはハイから非常にハイ・レベルで、とりわけフルーティー、トロピカル、ジューシーなキャラクターを伴う。ホップの苦味はローからミディアム・レベル。苦味の印象はソフトで全体のバランスときれいに調和していること。また、実際に感じる苦味のレベルはIBUの数値よりもかなり低い。モルトのアロマとフレーバーはローからハイ・レベルまでと幅が広い。濁りを促進するために、オート麦、小麦、そのほかの副原料を加えることができる。ビアスタイル名にある「ジューシー」という言葉は、大量のホップをドライホッピングすることでビールに付与される味とAromaのキャラクターを言い表しており、ジュース（果汁）のキャラクターは必要ない。そのほかにホップ由来のキャラクターとして、シトラス（柑橘）、パイン、スパイス、フローラル、ブラックカラント、その他のAromaが感じられてもよい。ダイアセチルがあってはならない。ボディはミディアムからフルの範囲。シルキーな触感または豊満なマウスフィールがフレーバーの全体に深みをつけるのに寄与している。クリスタルモルトよりダークなモルト、通常IPAには使用しないエール酵母、フルーツやスパイスその他の香味原料を使用してつくったバージョンは、エマージング・インディア・ペールエールに該当する。

Appearance (SRM)

4-5. Bright with strong haze. Whitish. Peach-like.

Aroma

Aroma (Orthonasal)

The signature Uchu aroma. Very sweet. Ripe melon from Citra, fresh nectarine-like citrus. A wonderfully pleasant sweet scent. The hops are in excellent condition with thick aromatics. The malt sweetness is pleasantly noticeable. Sweet fragrance.

Flavor (Retronasal)

Strong nectarine-like fruitiness. Behind it, melon and watermelon-like gourd impressions. Then peach. Intense peach. The sugar-enhanced peach aroma from canned peaches in syrup hits the back of the throat.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Very silky entry from oats. Excellent mouthfeel.

Body and Texture

Heavy. The body is undeniably heavy, and it feels very right. However, there’s an excessive spiciness. Seriously spicy. A chili pepper-like heat reminiscent of aged whisky, particularly Yoichi 10-year. Despite the overall sweet nuance, it’s too spicy and throws off the balance. Honestly a bit overwhelming on its own, but I think it would pair beautifully with carbs or meat.

The Swallow

You could call it dank, but it’s too spicy. It’s like swallowing hot ginger tea, almost painful. It leads to astringency. The spiciness is extreme.

Aftertaste

A burning spiciness lingers in the throat. The liquid itself is very dry. Very pleasant overall, but a bit harsh on its own. The balance is off. On the other hand, the fresh hop aroma that rises in the back of the nose after swallowing is wonderful. Fresh melon, dragon fruツ、赤い果実。種に近い部分のみずみずしい印象が一気にやってくる。辛さが許容できれば心地いい。

Dregs

Strong astringency and concentration. I seem to detect caramel notes that weren’t in the main pour. Am I imagining it?

Despite the freshness, high ABV, and full body, the head retention felt poor. Head foam in this style isn’t necessary since it can emphasize hop bitterness, but it felt somewhat lacking.

Overall Impression

Extremely spicy — the heat is severe. There was also a mismatch between Green Cheek’s characteristic lightness and Uchu Brewing’s signature sweet Hazy style. That said, it made me think lighter Hazies have their place. It was such a delicious beer that the excessive spice is truly disappointing. Some people might find it within their tolerance.
