Modern Times Beer (San Diego) | Coffee Nitro Stout

Hi there! I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. In August 2025, I visited the Modern Times Beer taproom in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood. I’ve been a huge fan of this brewery ever since I lived in Okayama (岡山), Japan, and I’m thrilled to finally share my experience drinking their beers at the source!

About Modern Times Beer

Modern Times Beer is a popular craft brewery founded in San Diego in 2013. Known for Orderville Hazy IPA, coffee beers, and experimental styles, they’ve built a dedicated following among personal importers in Japan as well. After going through significant changes around 2023, including an acquisition and brewing team changes, the taproom continues to operate in North Park. The brewery currently brews using AleSmith’s facilities on a contract basis. Notably, one of the former Modern Times brewers went on to start HUMAN PEOPLE in Seattle, which is also well worth checking out.

Venue & Atmosphere

The taproom is still going strong, with an impressive lineup of tap handles behind the counter. It’s a lively space where local craft beer fans gather, especially buzzing on weekends. Coffee-themed decor is visible throughout, reflecting the brewery’s identity in every corner of the interior.

Beers I Had

I tried two beers on this visit. First, the Orderville Hazy IPA that I’d been dreaming about since my Okayama days, and then the Coffee Stout (Nitro), which you can only get fresh at the source.

I’d always found the balance between dark malt acidity and coffee acidity to be the trickiest part of coffee stouts, but Modern Times nails it perfectly. Better yet, this one was served on nitro, giving it an incredibly smooth mouthfeel that was absolutely sublime.
