こんにちは!I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. This time I’m reporting on a 3-night, 4-day trip from New York City (NYC) to Albany, visiting 16 breweries and beer bars. This is a travel diary of a Hazy IPA pilgrimage, feeling the evolution of “yeast x hops” firsthand.

Trip Overview

Duration3 nights, 4 days
Places Visited16 (breweries & beer bars)
RouteNew York City → Albany
BudgetApprox. $1,500 (3 nights, 4 days)
TransportAmtrak (NYC-Albany) + Uber (local transit)

Travel Strategy: Amtrak + Uber is Optimal

The Amtrak Empire Service (about 2 hours 20 minutes) is the best way to get from NYC to Albany. Departing from Penn Station, you arrive at Albany-Rensselaer station, then use Uber to efficiently hop between breweries. The biggest advantage is being able to drink beer while traveling without a rental car.

Three Main Schools of Hazy IPA I Experienced in New York

While visiting breweries in NYC and Albany, I noticed Hazy IPA broadly falls into three schools:

  • Tropical-forward: Passion fruit, mango, and pineapple take center stage. Fruity with noticeable sweetness
  • Citrus-forward: Grapefruit and orange zest characteristics. Well-balanced bitterness and juiciness
  • Hop quantity assault: Overwhelming hop quantities creating complex, layered umami flavors

Hazy IPA, also called New England IPA (NEIPA), is characterized by its intentionally hazy appearance from yeast-derived proteins. Since this style originated in the eastern New England region, the NYC to Albany area is essentially a “holy land” near its birthplace!

Highlights: Most Memorable Breweries

Fidens Brewing Company(Albany近郊)

A powerhouse that ranks among the world’s best on Untappd. Located near Albany, this Hazy IPA specialist delivers beers with stunning balance of juiciness and complexity.

Suarez Family Brewery

A family brewery in the Hudson Valley. Known for distinctive beers with wild ale-like natural fermentation nuances. The rural farm setting makes the visit itself a special experience.

16 spots in 3 nights and 4 days – even I admit that’s quite a pace (laughs). But each brewery had such a different “school” of Hazy IPA, and comparing them was incredibly fun! As an engineer, I couldn’t help wanting to classify and categorize everything.

Budget & Cost Breakdown

Total cost for 3 nights, 4 days was about $1,500. Main expenses include round-trip Amtrak, 2-3 nights hotel, beer, and Uber. To maximize your beer investment, Albany hotels are cheaper than NYC with higher brewery density, so an Albany base is recommended.

Travel Tips & Packing Checklist

Here are the tips I used as an engineer to efficiently visit 16 spots.

  • Install the Untappd app in advance. Check-ins serve as a travel log
  • Growlers (takeaway containers) available on-site. Check social media in advance for can release days
  • Keep water and snacks handy. Don’t forget to hydrate between beers
  • Uber estimates in the Albany area are about $5-15 per ride. Much cheaper than NYC
  • Stay in downtown Albany for walking distance to Fort Orange Brewing and Druthers Brewing

NYC breweries get crowded on Fridays and Saturdays, so visiting on weekday afternoons is a hidden gem strategy! The Albany area is relatively less crowded, so you can comfortably visit on weekends too!
