This was the last day of a three-day, two-night trip to Nagano (長野). What a fantastic three days it was. Shiga Kogen’s Helles was so incredibly delicious that I was determined to drink it on-site. Then a senior colleague who loves skiing invited me on a ski trip, which kicked off the whole plan back in April of the previous year. I love skiing too and can handle myself reasonably well (though I’m not great), so on day two we hit the slopes. My senior jokingly said I had “a 1990s skiing style.” Skiing at Shiga Kogen was so much fun that I’d love to come back just for the skiing alone.
The Shiga Kogen Helles was, as expected, stunningly good. There’s a bit of a walk from the bus stop to the farmhouse, and having that crisp Helles poured after getting slightly tired from the walk was truly refreshing. I gulped down four-fifths of a pint almost without thinking because it felt so good. This Helles was exactly why I came.
The IPA was also excellent — it had a really pronounced grassy, dank character that kept you coming back for more.
Since TEPPA is directly connected to the hotel, I went with pints only. Had “Mugamuchu” as a full pint.
The taproom looks like it has such a wonderful atmosphere! Beer lovers should definitely give it a visit!
Being able to drink fresh Hazy by the pint is a true brewpub perk. Since it’s attached to the hotel, not having to worry about getting back was really great.
This is the brewpub where I thought “the Helles is way too good — I absolutely have to drink it on-site!” So grateful I made it… the Helles is just incredible!
