Craft Beer Review
Appearance
Slightly hazy and transparent.
Aroma
Orthonasal Aroma
A blend of malt sweetness and hop fruitiness. More Strata-like berry than Nelson Sauvin – not quite strawberry but definitely berry-forward. Then comes tart pineapple and a white grape reminiscent of white wine reaching deep into the nose. The initial coolness is like tart kiwi. All of this mixed with malt sweetness and alcohol evokes Hi-Chew candy. Reminds me of that fizzy cotton candy whose name escapes me.
Retronasal Flavor
Salted watermelon. So simple that no other description comes to mind. If forced, tart kiwi. Incredibly simple and easy to gulp down. Nothing trips you up. Really excellent.
Taste
Mouthfeel
Slightly heavy. Substantial malt, similar to Smog City in my opinion.
Body and Texture
Medium body. Not light, but feels light. The balance of alcohol spiciness and malt sweetness is exceptional. A whiskey-like alcohol spiciness beyond just hops, beautifully wrapped in malt sweetness – so well integrated you don’t notice the heat. While savoring these flavors, a grape-like sweet aroma reaches the back of the nose. Medium body that beautifully delivers hop aromas deep into the nasal passages.
A stem-like quality in the bitterness – mixed with malt sweetness, this creates what I perceive as Strata’s strawberry character.
The Swallow
A dank, pushing sensation. It drops dramatically down the throat. A slightly persistent but pleasant sweetness like pineapple warmed with meat stimulates the back of the throat.
Aftertaste
The brilliance of the swallow lingers long. Incredible aftertaste. Despite being crisp and dry, the finish persists remarkably. Like the feeling after drinking ramune-flavored sparkling water – slightly sweet with a fizzy sensation. A chicle-like (spent gum) or minty coolness gently tingles in the mouth.
Bottom of the Glass
Slightly more acidic but with a certain beauty. Like an unripe kiwi.
Overall Impression
An ideal West Coast IPA that made me want to keep drinking! Packed with fruit impressions while solidly respecting the bitterness. Truly excellent!
