This beer absolutely defeated me — I was 80 minutes late to work the next day. A complete defeat. It was the first time in my life I’d overslept, so I was shocked. But this beer was incredibly delicious!

About This Beer

Characteristics

Ultra-long aging in select bourbon barrels adds intense flavors and aromas of oak, toasted vanilla, and fine tobacco to the deeply roasted, full-bodied character of this notorious Double Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout. Exciting!

Description of the base beer:

This extreme Double Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout overwhelms, satisfies, and destroys taste buds like nothing else!! A B.O.R.I.S. Crusher Stout that won the D.O.R.I.S. gold medal. The first wort was dry-hopped with the finest American hops for a magnificent imperial hop experience within a magnificent imperial stout. Enjoy the darkness!

Appearance

Pitch black

Aroma

Orthonasal Aroma

Woody whisky-like aroma. Mixed with malt. Dark chocolate. The whisky-like scent and dark chocolate notes are wonderfully pleasant.

Retronasal Flavor

Bitter chocolate and strong whisky-like alcohol. Beautiful bitter chocolate that supports the whisky-like aroma. Behind the sweet notes, a subtle marmalade-like hop citrus.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Slightly silky mouthfeel. The oats are intensely present. Hoppin’ Frog’s craft beers generally have a gentle mouthfeel. It slides into your mouth without any sense of the alcohol content.

Body and Texture

On the tongue there’s a distinctly oat-like, deliberately silky sensation. On the tongue it’s not flashy — instead, an elegant, spirit-like nobility. Soy sauce in the depths. The shaoxing wine quality is understated. The whisky character is strong.

The Swallow

Effortlessly smooth drinking. Glides down the throat, yet the strength of the alcohol reaches the nose. Wonderful. There’s an ephemeral beauty in how the alcohol reveals itself afterwards.

Aftertaste

Sweet, chocolatey malt aroma with a cookie-like quality.

Overall Impression

Though sweetness is restrained, chocolate-like flavors fill the mouth and bring happiness. The alcohol presence and whisky barrel affinity are excellent. I’d love to drink this alongside a Starbucks chocolate frappuccino. That was my review of Hoppin’ Frog BA B.O.R.I.S. Oatmeal Imperial Stout!

Sediment

Gritty bitterness. I’d love to pour this over yukimi daifuku (ice cream mochi).
