Hi there! I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. Of all the breweries I visited during my stay in Denver, Bierstadt Lagerhaus was the only one I went to twice. I first visited in October 2025 and returned again as the final stop on my GABF brewery crawl.

Unwavering respect for traditional German lagers — that’s the philosophy of Bierstadt Lagerhaus. Denver is known as a craft beer city, but this brewery, which proudly focuses exclusively on lagers, convinced me after visiting that it’s “undoubtedly among Denver’s best.”

What is Bierstadt Lagerhaus?

Bierstadt Lagerhaus is a lager-focused brewery on Blake Street in the RiNo district. The entire menu consists of German-style lagers only — Helles, Pilsner, Amber, and Dunkel, all brewed meticulously without compromise. The simplicity of being “lager-only” proves their quality. Even the name — “Bierstadt” (beer city) and “Lagerhaus” (lager house) — conveys their deep respect for German brewing culture.

Located in the same RiNo area as River North Brewery, it’s convenient for combining multiple brewery visits during a Denver stay.

Taproom Atmosphere

The interior is simple yet authentic — a calm space reminiscent of a German Brauhaus with communal long tables for drinking together. There’s almost no menu beyond beer, which actually creates a “focus on the beer” experience. The staff clearly understand the brewery’s dedication to craft and answered my beer questions thoroughly.

Beers I Had

Helles（燻製モルト入り）

The most impressive was the Helles. Helles is a classic Bavarian light lager known for simple malt sweetness and gentle hops — but Bierstadt Lagerhaus’s Helles actually uses smoked malt!

“Smoked malt in a Helles?” I was skeptical, but upon tasting, there was indeed a subtle yet unmistakable smokiness. This smoke character spreads behind the malt sweetness, creating an exquisite balance that’s light yet deep. The masterful use of smoke without compromising the lager’s clean character speaks volumes about the brewer’s skill.

Slow Pour Pils (Flagship Beer)

The quintessential Bierstadt Lagerhaus beer is the Slow Pour Pils. As the name suggests, it’s a pilsner served with the traditional German “slow pour” technique, taking time to build the foam. Beneath the fine, creamy head lies a crisp hop bitterness and clean malt. Drinking this, I felt “this is the essence of a German beer bar.”

Amber Lager

The Amber Lager was also excellent. The caramel malt sweetness and subtle biscuit notes were delightful, and comparing all three beers deepened my appreciation for Bierstadt Lagerhaus’s brewing expertise.
