A Supernova Emerges in Bend, Oregon
Bend, Oregon — where the Deschutes River whispers through a town that’s home to legendary breweries like Deschutes Brewery and Boneyard Beer. But in 2025, an incredible new star appeared in this craft beer mecca.
Hello! I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. Riho Brewery No.254, USA No.146 is UPP Liquids from Bend, Oregon. Just four months after opening, they won 5 medals at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) 2025 — America’s largest beer competition — plus the “251-500 Barrel Category Brewery and Brewer of the Year” award. A literal powerhouse brewery.
During my visit, I tried their sour ales and modern West Coast IPA, and both were genuinely impressive. The secret lies in a team with over 100 combined years of brewing experience.

🏭 The Birth Story of UPP Liquids — 10 Barrel’s Brain Trust Reunites
UPP Liquids was born in June 2025 from Immersion Brewing (est. 2016), a popular Bend brewery. “UPP” stands for “Uniting People and Places” — and true to its name, this brewery connects communities through beer.
What’s remarkable is the brewing team. Head brewer Tonya Cornett is a 30+ year industry veteran who became the first woman to win the Brewmaster Award at the 2008 World Beer Cup. With a career total of 16 GABF medals and 12 World Beer Cup medals, she also received the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Craft Brewing in 2024 — the industry’s highest honor for innovation.
Alongside Cornett, Ian Larkin, Jose Ruiz, and Ben Shirley — all former members of 10 Barrel Brewing’s innovation team — joined forces with Immersion Brewing owners Sean Lampe and Amanda Plattner to create what is truly a dream team of Oregon’s craft beer scene.
🍻 Taproom & Atmosphere
UPP Liquids occupies space in “The Box Factory,” a renovated complex on SW Industrial Way in Bend. The spacious taproom features both indoor and outdoor dining areas, plus pinball machines for a casual vibe.
Beyond beer, the food menu is impressive — fish & chips, gnocchi, nachos, smash burgers, and more pub fare that pairs perfectly with their beers. All beers are offered at the same low price point, which is a welcome touch.
🍺 Beers I Tried — Blown Away by the Sour & WCIPA Dual Threat
During my visit, I experienced their sour ales and a modern West Coast IPA.
Sour / Tart Ales
I’ve never had a sour that expressed cucumber character this cleanly. Fruity with perfectly balanced acidity — exceptional. UPP Liquids’ sour lineup won 2 golds and 2 silvers at GABF 2025, proving their prowess.
West Coast IPA
The WCIPA was a refreshing, crisp pour bursting with hop aroma — cutting-edge West Coast style. Oregon has no shortage of WCIPA masters like Fort George Brewery and Wayfinder Beer, and UPP Liquids firmly belongs in that lineage.
🏅 GABF 2025 Awards — 5 Medals + Brewery of the Year
Just four months after opening, UPP Liquids won 5 medals at the Great American Beer Festival 2025, plus the “251-500 Barrel Category Brewery and Brewer of the Year” award. An extraordinary feat among 8,300+ entries.
| Medal | Beer | Category |
|---|---|---|
| 🥇 Gold | Buzz Box | Category 13: Honey Beer |
| 🥇 Gold | Moments Made (Blueberry & Rose Tea) | Category 62: Specialty Berliner-Style Weisse |
| 🥈 Silver | UPP Yours (Cucumber Tart Ale) | Category 4: Field Beer |
| 🥈 Silver | Flower Child (Peach, Chamomile, Cardamom Gose) | Category 63: Contemporary Gose |
| 🥉 Bronze | Reduction Ratio (Imperial Stout 9.75%) | Category 91: Imperial Stout |
Only 3 breweries won 5+ medals at the same GABF: UPP Liquids, Westbound & Down Brewing (6 medals, most at GABF 2025), and Fat Head’s Brewery. A truly historic competition.
Tonya Cornett’s Award History
| Year | Award | Details |

🍺 Top 5 Beers (with Untappd Ratings)
| Beer | Style | ABV | Untappd | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Sky | Imperial Stout (Barrel-Aged) | 11% | 4.19/5 | Heaven Hill barrel-aged with raspberry. Midnight black imperial stout |
| UPP Yours | Cucumber Tart Ale / Gose | 5.5% | 4.06/5 | GABF 2025 Silver. Signature sour with standout cucumber freshness |
| Flower Child | Contemporary Gose | 5.5% | 4.04/5 | GABF 2025 Silver. Peach, chamomile, and cardamom gose |
| Reduction Ratio | Russian Imperial Stout | 9.75% | 4.04/5 | GABF 2025 Bronze. Full-bodied imperial stout |
| UPPlift | West Coast IPA | 7.2% | 3.89/5 | Citra/Mosaic/Strata/Simcoe. Layers of tropical, pine, and citrus |

The standout here is the sour/tart ale lineup! 4 of the 5 GABF 2025 awards were for sour styles. Tonya Cornett developed the “Crush Series” kettle sour brand during her 10 Barrel days and is renowned as a sour beer innovator. Her philosophy that “beer is more than just IPAs” is beautifully realized here!

I was genuinely amazed by the sour quality! Never had a sour with such clean cucumber expression. The fruity yet perfectly balanced acidity was outstanding. And the WCIPA had hops bursting with refreshment — this dual threat makes it a new must-visit spot in Bend!

5 GABF medals just 4 months after opening — that’s amazing! Woof! I want to try the cucumber sour too! Woof!
