Craft Beer Review: Wayfinder Beer / Export (Dortmunder)
This article is based on a May 2023 tasting experience and was updated in June 2025.
What you will learn
- Characteristics and history of the Export (Dortmunder) style
- The appeal of Wayfinder Beer’s high-quality German-style lager
- The gorgeous, luxurious flavor created by noble hops
Wayfinder Beer is an American craft brewery based in Portland, Oregon, founded in 2016. Specializing in German-style lagers, they produce high-quality beers that fuse traditional techniques with modern sensibility. The “Export” reviewed here is a Dortmunder-style (Export) beer. Born in the Dortmund region of Germany in the 19th century, this style was brewed with slightly higher ABV (typically 5.2-6.0%) for export, featuring a gorgeous and luxurious flavor profile.

As the name “Export” suggests, this beer style was created in 19th-century Dortmund, Germany, for export! They made it slightly higher in ABV than regular lager so it would keep its quality during long sea voyages!

Wow, so Yebisu Beer is also this style! How interesting that it shares a style with Japan’s iconic premium beer. I wonder what the differences are?

An American craft brewery making a German style – how fascinating! There must be some special craftsmanship involved!

Export Style Characteristics
Style Attributes
Appearance (Subjective)
Pouring into the glass reveals a surprisingly crystal clear beautiful golden color. Transparent enough to see through completely, slightly lighter than typical Dortmunder. While standard Dortmunder tends to be more brownish (SRM 5-6), this shows a modern Wayfinder interpretation.
Aroma Profile (Subjective)
Aroma (Orthonasal) Progression – Personal Impression
Just Poured
A slightly wild, perhaps raw-smelling unique aroma. Yeast-derived ironiness gives a blood-like impression (had a similar experience with two fingers * inkhorn).
After Temperature Rise
Transforms into elegant, refined noble hops. Lemon drop, yeast-derived spiciness, and light malt character (popcorn-like) spread.
The following aroma evaluation is a personal impression. Aroma perception varies.

The aroma changes with temperature because beer’s complex compounds change their volatility with heat! Noble hops (Germany’s traditional Big Four varieties: Hallertau, Tettnang, Spalt, and Saaz) especially reveal their delicate aromas at the right temperature!
As temperature rises further, the malt’s cookie-like grain character becomes prominent. With mass-market beers, this stage often becomes unpleasant, but Wayfinder’s Export maintains its elegance throughout.
Flavor Profile (Retronasal) – Subjective
Overwhelming Noble Hop Magnificence (Personal Impression)
Noble hops bloom with incredible magnificence!A luxuriousness that sweeps away all the inadequacy you feel when drinking mass-market beers! So good!
Detailed Taste Analysis (Subjective)
The following taste evaluation is a personal impression. Taste varies by individual.
Mouthfeel
Natural beer-like drinkability with a slightly viscous texture. This is a characteristically Dortmunder trait, maintaining an exquisite balance of not too light, not too heavy.
Body and Texture

The gap between aroma and taste is fascinating! There’s a substantial body you wouldn’t expect from such a light aroma.
The Swallow
A Luxurious Three-Part Harmony (Personal Impression)
Noble hops x yeast character x alcohol sensation! The noble hop aroma, yeast spiciness, and apple-like alcohol sensation arrive all at once in a gorgeous combination.
Aftertaste

So it’s a beer to savor slowly! Makes you want to take your time and enjoy every sip!
Overall Impression (Subjective)
An Exquisite Dortmunder Experience (Personal Impression)
A lighter, more beautiful Yebisu is how I would describe this gorgeous, refined beer. Love it! Pairs exceptionally well with fatty fish – a beer to enjoy with salmon.
Overall Rating
About the Bottle Sediment
Perhaps because the temperature has risen, the sediment has an intense malt cookie character. In the mouth there’s strong acidity and alcohol, but it’s also tasty. Fine to mix in, and in fact adds to the beer’s complexity.
Where to Buy
Wayfinder Beer’s Export is available at import craft beer shops like The Slop Shop. The importer is HATOS BAR, with stock usually arriving around May.

I didn’t know Japan’s Yebisu is the same Export style! Now I want to compare them at home!

For enjoying the Dortmunder style, Yebisu is the most accessible choice in Japan! You can bulk buy on Rakuten or Amazon – comparing it with Wayfinder’s Export will reveal the differences clearly!

Comparing Yebisu with this Wayfinder Export reveals the differences between Japanese and American Dortmunder interpretations. I recommend starting with the classic Yebisu and gradually exploring international Export styles.
