In September 2025, as part of the Reuben’s Brews Fresh Hop Field Trip, I visited Bale Breaker Brewing Company in Yakima, WA — right in the heart of America’s hop country. Their legendary Top Cutter IPA in its fresh hop edition was absolutely incredible.

Bale Breaker Brewing Company is a craft brewery located in Yakima, Washington — America’s hop capital producing about 75% of the nation’s hops. What makes this brewery truly special is that it sits adjacent to the B.T. Loftus Ranches hop farm, which has been in the family for over 100 years. The brewery was founded by the fourth generation of the Loftus family, creating a direct farm-to-glass experience. Their flagship beer, Top Cutter IPA, is widely distributed even in Japan, but the fresh hop version available only during harvest season (September-October) is in a league of its own.

Atmosphere & Space

The taproom is spacious and open, with large windows offering views of the surrounding hop fields. Walking outside, you can literally see the hops growing right next to the brewery — a sight that sends any hop lover’s heart racing. The massive brewing equipment visible from the taproom reinforces the scale and seriousness of the operation. With a relaxed outdoor patio area, it’s the perfect spot to take in the Yakima Valley scenery while enjoying a pint.

The Pilsner was equally impressive with its crystal-clear finish, proving that Bale Breaker excels across styles.
