Hi there! I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. In October 2025, for the 6th stop on my GABF brewery tour, I visited “Funkwerks” in Fort Collins, Colorado. At the time of my visit, I learned this brewery was scheduled to close in November 2025. I’m truly grateful I was able to visit one last time — this is the record of that special final pour.

About Funkwerks

Funkwerks was a Fort Collins institution that specialized in complex Belgian styles — particularly saisons and Belgian ales. Known as the “standard-bearer of Belgian-American style” in Fort Collins’ craft beer scene, they carved out a unique path apart from mainstream trends, earning a devoted fanbase through their artisan approach to brewing.

Sadly, Funkwerks closed in November 2025. A legendary brewery etched into Fort Collins’ craft beer history has drawn its final curtain.

Saison originated in Belgium’s Walloon region as a farmhouse beer — fruity, dry, with a crisp finish! The yeast-derived spiciness and esters create complex flavors. The style evolved as a “beer to quench a farmer’s thirst during fieldwork.” Funkwerks expressed this style at an exceptional level here in America!

Taproom Atmosphere

My first impression was that of a warm, cozy space reminiscent of an American home. Unlike large tourist-oriented breweries, this was an intimate, homey atmosphere where local regulars gathered. The wall art and decor reflected Funkwerks’ playful spirit — simply being in the space was a pleasure, beyond just drinking beer.

During my visit, I heard directly from the staff that they would be closing in November. The expressions of regulars mourning the closure — alongside staff still committed to serving the best possible pours — left a lasting impression.

Beer I Had: Saison

I ordered Funkwerks’ signature saison. The first sip revealed a somewhat classical character with a pronounced malt presence. Lightness with depth — a slowly unfolding umami that embodied everything great about the saison style.

In a craft beer landscape dominated by IPAs and Hazy IPAs, Funkwerks chose to polish Belgian styles to perfection. That spirit felt concentrated in this single glass.

I never imagined that stop number 6 on my GABF tour would become my “last-ever visit.” But precisely because of that, this glass holds a special place in my memory. Funkwerks stayed true to saison through the IPA boom — thank you for everything. I’m so glad I made it in time…

A final saison in that warm, homey taproom… it tugs at the heartstrings. Losing a beloved brewery is sad, but I’m so glad Riho got to visit one last time! The flavor lives on forever through this article!
