Hey there! I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. On this brewery trip through Washington State, I visited El Sueñito Brewing Company, a unique brewery with two locations: the original brewhouse in Bellingham and a taproom in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood.

What is El Sueñito Brewing Company?

El Sueñito (pronounced “sweh-NEE-toh”) means “little dream” in Spanish. Founded in February 2023 in Bellingham, it gained major attention as Washington State’s first Mexican & queer (LGBTQ+) owned brewery. Owners Dennis and Osbaldo previously launched Frelard Tamales, a Mexican restaurant in Seattle, in 2015. In August 2024, they opened a new taproom in Seattle’s Fremont/Frelard neighborhood. The brewery’s unique concept fuses craft beer with Mexican culture.

Atmosphere & Space

The Bellingham taproom offers the luxurious brewery experience of drinking beer right in front of the brewing tanks. With many Mexican-heritage staff members, there’s a warm and lively atmosphere that perfectly blends Mexican and Pacific Northwest vibes. The food menu is extensive, featuring tacos and other Mexican dishes to enjoy alongside your beer.

The Seattle Fremont location is housed in the same building as Frelard Tamales, creating a combined space where you can enjoy Mexican cuisine and craft beer all at once. Over 1,500 people lined up for the grand opening, and the brewery has already established a solid presence in the Seattle craft beer scene.

Beers I Tried

Beer NameStyleTasting Notes
Mexican LagerMexican LagerRefreshingly crisp with a lime garnish for maximum refreshment. Light yet with solid malt backbone
Schwarzbier (Light Style)SchwarzbierA perfect balance of refreshment and richness. Not too heavy, with a special luxury of drinking it right by the tanks

The Mexican Lager in particular was served with a lime wedge, and paired with the Pacific Northwest climate, the refreshment was unbeatable. The Schwarzbier was best described as a “light dark beer” — the balance between richness and crispness was exquisite. It was the kind of beer that makes you want to come back for more.

Schwarzbier means “black” in German and is a dark lager style. It features roasted malt richness with a clean lager yeast finish. The relatively low ABV makes it great as a session beer!

Drinking beer right in front of the tanks was such a luxurious experience! Beer just tastes even better when you can feel the brewing process happening around you. Having two locations in both Seattle and Bellingham is super convenient, and the vibe at both spots was amazing!
