I visited “Kagoya Tasuku,” a brewery taproom in Komae (Tokyo, Komae-shi), to sample their craft beers. From crystal-clear, beautiful lagers crafted by a brewer with a major brewery background to innovative cedar barrel-aged beers, I tried all 6 varieties. “Kagoya Tasuku” is a brewery-restaurant launched in 2017 by “Kagoya Akimoto Shoten,” a historic sake shop founded in 1902 (Meiji 35). Head brewer Yuji Egami studied brewing science at Nara Institute of Science and Technology and spent 10 years at a major beer company. Six craft beers were on tap, and the 6-beer tasting set (420ml total) at just 1,100 yen was incredible value. Pints are served in limited-edition glasses, and the tasting flight comes in tulip-shaped glasses designed to highlight the aroma—a wonderful touch.

Sokyuu Helles Lager (5.0%)

Helles Lager is a pale lager originating from Munich, Germany. “Helles” means “bright” or “pale” in German. It features a refreshing drinkability while showcasing malt’s grain character, making it a great choice for beer newcomers. It has a more complex flavor and aroma than typical lagers.

I started with a pint of the Helles. When cold, it flows into you as smooth as water—a truly comfortable sensation. Best of all, as it warms, a toasty grain sweetness emerges. I was captivated by its stunning clarity when first served, and the way its flavor evolved with temperature made it undoubtedly my best beer of the day.

Tasting Flight (6 Beers × 70ml)

Baeren Guest Beer

A Baeren beer served as the guest selection. From the established brewery in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, it’s known for consistent quality and flavor. A classic style with a solid, satisfying taste.

IPA No. 6

The IPA had a hazy appearance, but the flavor was a boldly bitter, classic style. The citrus character was also very strong—a must-try for fans of West Coast IPAs. Notably, the IPA was poured without a head and served in a dedicated IPA glass—a wonderful attention to detail.

IPA stands for India Pale Ale. It originated when British brewers increased the hop and alcohol content to preserve beer during the long voyage to India. Cedar Barrel Beer

I was truly surprised by the delicate flavor of this beer. The liquid itself has a sharp finish, yet there’s a distinctive aroma unlike anything I’ve encountered before. The yeast aroma, spiciness, and sweetness create a beautifully complex bouquet. Fascinating as a fusion of traditional Japanese technique and beer brewing.嗅いだことのあまりない独特の香りが印象的。酵母の香り、スパイシーさと甘さを含んだ美しく複雑な香りにうっとりします。日本の伝統技術とビール醸造の融合という点で非常に興味深い一杯です。

Golden Ale

酵母の香りが美しいGolden Ale。嗅いでいるだけでもうっとりできる芳醇な香り立ちがCharacteristicsです。爽やかさと複雑さが共存した、バランスの取れた味わいでした。

A larger-sized IPA ordered by my friend. Like IPA No. 6, served without a head in an IPA glass. Thoughtfully designed to let you fully appreciate the aroma.泡なしでIPAグラスでの提供。香りを堪能しやすいよう配慮されています。

Belgian Black

Belgian Blackも酵母の香りが美しく、複雑な風味が楽しめました。ベルギービールのような、スパイシーで奥行きのある味わいが魅力です。

How to Order at Kagoya Tasuku

At Kagoya Tasuku, you order directly at the counter. Here are the ordering steps for first-time visitors.

Step 1:	カウンターに向かい、「飲み比べセットをお願いします」または「○○（ビール名）をパイントでお願いします」と注文
Step 2:	料金を支払い（現金、クレジットカード対応）
Step 3:	グラスを受け取る
Step 4:	テーブルやカウンター席で楽しむ

Ask “Dono beer ga osusume desu ka?” (Which beer do you recommend?) and the staff will happily explain. For first-timers, the tasting flight is the best way to sample various flavors.

Every beer was beautifully clear and transparent, and the Helles Lager in particular was so perfectly crafted you could drink it endlessly. While the location is a bit far from the station, the riverside walk along the Tama River is so pleasant it more than compensates for the inconvenience. A rewarding experience for craft beer beginners and experts alike.
