What Kind of Craft Beer?

Characteristics

This summer, the Paddle Brew farm yielded an unprecedented amount of hops. Perhaps it’s because we adopted a stray cat and named it Cascade.

We generously added farm-grown Cascade, Nugget, Mt. Hood, and other hops to create an ale with a refreshing aroma. Enjoy this year-only flavor.

Appearance (SRM)

SRM 4. Haze from oxidation with an iron-like quality.

Aroma

Aroma (Orthonasal)

Lychee and mint gum. Peach. Aged beer-like hop character. Heavy. Oxidized. The hops were likely fresh when added but have since oxidized. This character would be desirable in a high-ABV beer but is a mismatch here.

Flavor (Retronasal)

Grape and a hint of garlic, flavorless mint gum. Iron-like grape, peach.

Taste

Mouthfeel

Light. Almost feels thin. Watery.

Body & Texture

The body is too thin relative to the aroma intensity. Unbalanced. Very light.

The Swallow

Grape-like aromas tickle the back of the throat.

Aftertaste

Ramune-like sweetness lingers. Refreshing. But the iron-like oxidation flavor that persists from the moment of swallowing is very concerning.

Dregs

Strong grape and iron flavors

Overall Impression

It would probably have been delicious if drunk fresh.

If they had boosted the malt to balance out the hop quantity, my impression might have been different, but I suspect the brewing license limited the malt use.

In that case, rather than a fruity beer using lots of hops for dry hopping, I think a bitter WCIPA style using lots of hops for bittering would have worked better.

A WCIPA like Pizza Port’s would have been great, I think.
