Introduccion
Hola!

Are brewpubs and taprooms the same thing? I don’t really understand the difference woof…

They basically refer to the same thing, but brewpub means «brewery + restaurant» while taproom means «a place that serves beer» – there’s a slight nuance difference hop! Both offer the charm of enjoying ultra-fresh beer served directly from the brewery hop!
Riho loves such places and travels around the country visiting brewpubs / brewery touring. Even establishments that are technically «brewery-owned stores rather than brewpubs» because the beer bar is located away from the brewery facility are introduced as brewpubs in this blog.

About Cerveceroy Mugi Zakkoku Koubou

Mugi Zakkoku Koubou is a brewery where the millet weizen is truly delicious, and their «NaRa» series aged in barrels and foudres (wooden vertical tanks) is also very popular. When I tried it at MBCT’22 (Moto Cerveceroy Craft beer Tournament 2022), it was so delicious and moving!

What are barrel aging and foudres? Please explain in a way that beginners can understand guau!

Barrels are barrels, and foudres are large wooden tanks hop! When beer is aged in wood, the wood’s aroma and complexity are added, making the flavor richer hop. By using wine or whiskey barrels, some of those aromas also transfer slightly, transforming into a deep, complex taste hop!

Mugi Zakkoku Koubou Acceso and Second Stop Options

It was a 6-minute walk from Ogawa-machi Station. Since it had good access from a ramen shop called Chukasoba 136 that I had been curious about for a long time, I went to the ramen shop first and then came here.

Craft Beer Tap List (Available Beer List)

The taps seemed to change frequently! Also, it’s great that they use brewery glasses from S glass size. Only the L size weizen was served in a plain weizen glass.

I don’t really understand craft beer size notation woof. How many ml are S and L?

It varies by shop, but generally S is around 200-300ml, M is 350-400ml, and L is around 500ml hop! At Mugi Zakkoku Koubou, S size is affordable and lets you try various types, so I recommend it hop! For first-time shops, starting with S size for tasting comparison is a smart drinking approach hop!
Craft Beer Impressions – I got to drink the Millet Weizen too!
Millet Weizen Perfil de sabor
I had previously drunk the same beer during an online drinking session where I bought it from an online store. That was when I was shocked by this beer. Drinking it on-site, I could feel the banana-like aroma of the weizen even more vividly. It was truly delicious, and I was glad I came here again. Looking back, I should have had another glass before leaving.
【Beginner’s Guide: Weizen】
Weizen is a beer style originating from Germany that uses wheat. It’s characterized by fruity and spicy aromas like banana and clove, with good foam formation and smooth mouthfeel. In Germany, it’s sometimes drunk with breakfast as a familiar beer, and it’s also recommended as an introduction to Japanese craft beer.

I heard that weizen has a special glass guau! What kind of glass is good?

Weizen-specific glasses are characterized by their tall shape with a bulging top. This shape maintains rich foam and concentrates the banana and clove aromas. If you enjoy weizen at home, having a special glass will make it taste even better!
⭐ Glasses for Better Weizen Enjoyment
Using weizen-specific glasses lets you fully enjoy the rich foam and aroma. It will dramatically improve your home drinking quality!

This is a crisp Kölsch. It was served ice-cold and perfect for a hot summer day. The spicy aroma with pleasant lemon-like citrus notes made me drink it much faster than the first beer.

Next, I drank Mountain Peach Saison 2021, Irodori Watermelon, and Irodori Garden Herb. The Mountain Peach Saison had peach fruitiness and spiciness beautifully blended with the beer in a wonderful balance that moved me. Both Irodori series had just the right balance of beer with melon and herbs. In all these beers, the auxiliary ingredients weren’t the main focus – the beer was the star. I wanted to write proper tasting notes, but they were so delicious I ended up drinking them all quickly.
【Beginner’s Guide: Saison】
Saison is a beer style originating from Belgium, originally made to be drunk during the farming season (saison). It’s characterized by fruity aroma, spicy flavor, and light acidity. With its crisp mouthfeel, it pairs well with various foods. It has good compatibility with auxiliary ingredients like fruits and herbs, making it a style with many creative variations.

Finally, the porter. While having a slight tobacco character, it also had malt sweetness that was very delicious. It made me want chocolate.
