Ballast Point Brewing San Diego | Bold WCIPA Review

Hi there! I’m Riho, a craft beer enthusiast. During my August 2025 San Diego trip, I walked over from AleSmith to Ballast Point Brewing. Often described as a “near-major” in the American craft beer industry, the sheer scale of their brewing equipment was awe-inspiring!

Venue, Atmosphere & History

Ballast Point started in 1996 as a homebrew supply shop before growing rapidly into a craft brewery. Their 2015 acquisition by Constellation Brands for approximately $1 billion made major industry headlines. Today they continue to carry on their unique craft beer culture at a somewhat smaller scale.

The massive brewing equipment visible from outside is simply breathtaking! It’s a scale you’ll never experience at a microbrewery, and just looking at it gets your excitement going. The taproom is spacious and comfortable, bustling with everyone from local fans to travelers.

Personally, when I lived in Okayama (岡山), my local bottle shop always had Ballast Point beers in stock, so drinking them at the actual brewery carried a special sense of nostalgia. Having seen their beers distributed in Japan really drove home their international reputation.

Beer I Had: WCIPA

Ballast Point’s flagship is of course Sculpin IPA, but on this visit I focused on their taproom WCIPA. The solid San Diego-style body and a bold, assertive bitterness were front and center!
